I'd get away from the rectangle, or from trying to make an X or anything that thought out. Don't try to make elementary shapes unless the dish is super minimal. Think about the paddle idea with the rice, where you just squash the centre a bit so the shape itself is more dynamic. Add the sauce to the rice so it's dripping off a little, ribs, plantain and chilli in the middle of it to break up the white. Then try adding a textured element to the dish, some blended spices, a crumble of some kind (finely crushed herby breadcrumbs or something), etc.
It's not the best photo I've ever taken, the highlights are fucked. But this is what my pork rib dish looked like. See how I've used the chimmichurri and macadamias to add some chaos to the plate and make it less boring than just a stack of ribs? Similar idea.
