I'd start with a compact that has flash and then go onto a fully manual SLR if you want to have more creative control and learn the most.
I think for first cameras you should choose something that is either versatile in form or function. The problem with the rangefinders you mentioned is they aren't really pocketable like a compact and you cant change the lenses.
I have an Olympus 35 SP rangefinder and I always end up picking up an OM-1 instead.
