>>3447396Um, I'm fully aware the 808 is an outlier, that's why I opted to buy it at launch, at full price, and use it for years... Have you used the 808? Its tiny compared to basically any other modern phone. There's plenty of room for the 808 sensor in modern phones while sacrificing nothing. Look at 1020, same 41mp sensor yet a smaller and lighter phone than what typically launches today with a very minimal bump, how's that sacrificing anything? If anything a small bump makes it easier to hold and use, much like how people use those rings that u stick to the back of phones for your fingers, but much smaller.
And your final argument is a common silly one. I care about image quality but I don't wanna carry around a fuck ton of cameras or devices anytime I leave my house or go to the store. Having a phone with a powerful, competent sensor can be quite useful, and seeing as how it can easily fit inside many modern smart phones, that route should be investigated more. Having a competent camera is 1/3 of why I carry a phone at all, because its the random, unknown moments when you need to take a photo or video, where it can be very useful having a good cam in your phone, unless you wanna cart around a 4k$ DSLR everywhere you go just in case. So if I can carry a phone, that provides low noise, good low light performance, a sharper image (not artificial sharpening), and flat, even colors ready for editing, I'm going to carry that because for 99% of the random shit I take photos of, I do not need a DSLR or another camera.
And the only reason small sensor cameras are really getting better is because of better AI doing post processing of the image which, isn't perfect, can be very obvious, introduces artifacts, artificial blurring can blur the wrong subject, and overall, the noise floor of the 808 is better than pretty much any modern small sensor.
