Artists and scientists have been aware of it for centuries and aesthetic science, psychologists and neuroscientists have all agreed and written at length about how it directly relates to common brain activities when confronted with a framed image.

Actual film has flaws because it is analogue and fragile; prone to physical impurities and unforeseen features (tonal shifts etc) - which photographers associate with the "Artistic" process of chemically refining and crafting an image by hand.

For these people the digital image itself begins to raise questions about whether photography truly is an artform:
• Artist distanced from his work
• over reliance on mechanical/software aid
• lack of investment of time and effort by the artist.

So when you add to the argument the insult of using such technology to produce ANALOGUE style images - the very act becomes an absurd mockery of the very medium they are seeking to exploit.

Imagine if the person who invented Vaping decided that he would release a vape that had all the tar and nicotine and other carcinogenic crap in it - and people started smoking it because "its just like old cigarettes!"

That way madness lies.

In this sense it means the reasoning behind a work of art - the propositions which form the foundation of the piece.

The early 90s computer aesthetic has become quite popular recently - with its stunted graphics and strange neon compositions. I dont know why it has been so strongly associated with the word "aesthetic" - its like looking at a period in literature and calling it "AXIOLOGY".
