I used up over half a liter of IPA(pure isopropyl alcohol) to clean a huge collection of extremely dusty and awfully preserved negatives. It removes any fats, fingerprints, dust, virtually anything while denaturating and hardening/protecting the emulsion.
I have no clue where you got that piece of advice from, maybe trying to use <55% ethanol where the water content softened the emulsion? Or are you straight up trolling, because using water and softening the gelatin + any mechanical action on its surface = last thing you want to do with film short of straight up sandpaper.
