The LED version works for macro, cheaper, but they basically suck.
The proper flash tube variety is significantly more expensive and can generally be used for macro and portraiture. They do however tend to have a lower flash guide number (power).
I've seen both types that were "designed" for portraiture, and were generally quite a lot larger and more like a beauty dish.
