It's stupid to call the thing you put on a camera a lens, though, for the reason you mention, it consists of many individual lenses, lens just means something that has the rough shape of a lentil.
In other languages as well as more technical English it's called an objective, but that's also stupid because they are using an adjective as a noun. It would be better to call it an "objective assembly", but that would sound way too autistic.
