1 Pick a suitable background the subject. Avoid super busy backgrounds
2 Assuming you don't have lights now, use natural daylight outdoors to ensure model is well lit. If you're inside, shoot near a window
3 Remember you can blur a busy background using Aperture Priority Mode and suitable lens that can shoot at least f/2.8 or better
4 Exposure check...set it to compliment model's face
5 Focus on the eyes (depending on your camera/lens) you can focus manually or let the camera grab eye focus automatically
