Take the photo. If they notice you, smile and wave. Offer to show then photo if shooting digital, have pen and paper, or business card, ready if shooting film so you can show them later.
You're not doing anything illegal or invasive or sexual. If you start acting like you are doing that people will pick up on it and make assumptions.
Most people don't want trouble, just like you, and won't make a scene over a quick photo on the street.
