you should nail the composition you want, exposure too if the dynamic rang isn't crazy. But sometimes the only way to get the shot you want is to crop
if your lens can't get closer than 1:1 and you're shooting a small subject you can only frame it best you can in a way that will allow you to end up with the shot you want after editing
Pic related. mobile subject at 1:1, very shallow depth of field. Had the idea of the perfect shot, but could only get so close, so main goal was to nail focus and try to frame it so I could crop to what I was imagining later.
