It's not that the shots are underexposed, it's that his model is poorly lit. A slightly dark scene is fine, but if your model almost blends into the background because of it, then you've got a problem. Again, this isn't a problem you can fix in post (without looking grossly artificial). The solution is to find spots where the model is better lit.
