>>2678584I actually was press when I shot that photo, and a long lens was still pretty critical. Tracks have such huge runoff areas these days that you can almost never get very close. At Laguna Seca, the only places you can use less than 200mm are the insides of the top of the Corkscrew (which is scary as hell, BTW, you can literally walk up to the edge of the track with no wall) and the inside of turn 9. Otherwise, you need around 200-300mm for tight panning shots in most places.
Turn 11 is another good example of a corner that needs long glass, this was a 70-200 with a TC14 and I think a crop body.
