admittedly my experience is chatting with the media team from a couple crappy jobs I've had, plus some punk kids shooting for zines and some crappy pornographers but

none of them sank 2 grand on a kit before taking payed work... the zine/punk/drag show kids shoot on like d3300s, so do the porn people until they make it big

the corporate people don't even own their own cameras (k one girl had a fuji i saw her playing with sometimes), the company just always has a set of a7s and some 2.8 zooms
