>>2963642Film is a set ISO. For example, you might see a film called 'Kodak Portra 400', this film has an ISO of 400. Just as you use higher ISO's in low light on a digital camera, so do you use higher ISO film.
The ISO rating of film is referred to as 'speed'. High speed film would be like 800 or 1600 ISO, where as low speed film would be like ISO 50.
If you're just taking photos at parties, I would suggest buying a camera with flash like a cheap compact camera. The AE1 is a great camera, and if you can get it with a 28mm for $50 that's an awesome deal.
In terms of specific films, it depends if you want colour or black and white. For colour, things like Fuji Superia 800 or 1600 is great for night shooting (however if you're using a flash you can easily get away with using 200 or 400 speed film). Black and white, things like Kodak Tri-X and Ilford HP5+ are your best bet.
Once you've got your head wrapped around all that and you've shot a few rolls, you should investigate pushing film.
