>>3839396>>3839410>>3839416>>3839424Okay, so, it doesn't actually *matter* because the real point that started this argument was not "Can f/8 equivalent give you shallow depth of field" but rather "Do you need f/1.2 equivalent to get shallow depth of field". Even if the guy who said that was being hyperbolic, it's not actually all that relevant to his argument.
But that being said, here you go. f/8 at 70mm on full frame will give you an out of focus background even at regular torso-up portrait distance. Not insanely shallow, sure, but the background is definitely out of focus. And if you really wanted to accentuate it, you could always adjust the focus a bit more so that your subject is at the back end of the depth of field instead of right in the primary focal plane and that'll give you more bokeh.
But, again, the actual real world argument we're trying to make is not about f/8, it's that you can get DoF shallow enough for 99% of people in 99% of situations without needing to go all the way to f/1.2 equivalent.
