You can't focus predictively by muscle memory for instant shooting because of the input delay and the software acceleration. It's useful as an ersatz snap mode at best. It you're taking the time to look down at the virtual DoF scale and twiddle the dial until you reach the focus distance you want, while also breaking sight of the scene and subjects. You might as well just autofocus at that point.
Yes there's things like astrophotography and macro stuff, but then again, why use an X series when reflex cameras and full frame mirrorless cameras exist?
