I made a comparison test on lightness alone. First is the pic you attached with default Photoshop's Desaturate, another is color corrected and then desaturated. I corrected deep shadow detail and tried to pushing bright areas more to the midtones and adding contrast only in that part. There seem to be some value crushing going on.
