Leica has had a thing for Everest, in 1982 they kitted out a Canadian expedition to the summit with $150,000 worth of camera gear (a lot of money back in 1982). Leica used a low temperature silicone grease for the cameras and produced a limited edition run Everest edition of the M4-p to help promote their Canadian made camera. The story goes that all of the Leica cameras failed and that one of the expedition members had a K-1000, and that he took the photos at the summit which ended up in the Leica catalogue.
I am not trying to be a part of the Leica hate we have on /p/, I love my M3 and have shot it in -18c. I don.t know just how cold it will function in, but the Pentax K-1000 is a beast for adverse conditions.
