Hello, retard and complete newbie here. I inherited a Nikon FE. There's a depth-to-field preview lever right next to the lens, but when I depress it it seems to do absolutely nothing. Is depth-to-field really that subtle or am I doing something wrong? And yes I am trying different apertures, and shutter speed is on auto

I've gone through 2 Minolta x700s and 2 Nikon FEs, I'm tired of these old cameras breaking. I don't even abuse them, I just leave them on the shelf and when I pick them up a month later they are broken.
All I want is:
1. A light meter
2. Aperture priority
3. Manual mode.
4. Compact size. Nikon F series it too big.
5. Affordable lenses.
6. More reliable.
Does such a thing exist?

I bought a Nikon FE, absolutely banging camera. I would like to try out different cameras to get a feel for them. I had a Canon QL17, which was meh, but I'd love to try a Leica M6, and a few medium format cameras.
