It seems a lot of the ire is drawn when they dunk on brand pulling some bullshit. People here and all over the internet have unfortunately emotionally invested in their system of choice. A vicious teardown of the lens or lens system or body or firmware or whatever is like a personal attack on a persons life choice essentially. And the funny thing is when asked these people sputter out a response but they clearly can't even remember what incensed them, all they remember is feeling enraged and being reminded of that rage every time they see them.
Now its true that we should be skeptical of all reviewers, this is why I watch a wide gamut of the "big" ones like T and C, Gerald, Jordan and Chris, and some smaller ones like Josh Satin and others that are smaller channels. As well as articles of course. I notice some like Gerald for instance seems to have a bias for Sony, while his data is technical he can spin it/explain it a certain way. For instance a lot of his overheating testing like on the A1 didn't seem to matchup with others methodology, thats the benefit of peer review. I can sense that the bigger creators have to pull punches or not examine too closely the faults when they rely on maintaining relationships with the brands in order to secure coveted previews and loaner bodies.
Meanwhile T&C make it a point to call out harshly and now that I think about it, it is easily the harshest which points to this trend of other channels having to walk a tightrope of not being too honest when Sony Canon or whoever shits the bed.
This perceived overly critical or even slanderous MO leads to emotionally invested and insecure people to lash out in kind.
