The decisive moment theory is very much about taking advantage of pretty light when you see it, and knowing how to take advantage of it
Some scenes work better in black and white, others in colour, sometimes you want to save the highlights, others the shadows (I have 0 qualms about blowing highlights, it's not often interesting stuff in what I shoot, unless I'm doing sunset photography or such)
