>>3295795I've gotten so close to moose that I couldn't frame a shot properly with my prime (good argument for a zoom) and on a couple of occasions while I was in cover, they have approached so close that I couldn't even achieve focus. Pic related is a missed shot as far as I'm concerned.
It's fine as long as you let them come to you... don't approach them. Stay concealed, don't move, and have an escape route, and you're alright. It's also not hard to escape a moose if you're at the edge of very dense woods (the only place you should be positioned) because they can't get in. You can just walk away if they get agitated. Look for trees growing 1 or 2 feet apart. A lot of spruce will do that.
All you really have to be weary about is being out in the open with a bull in rutting season. That is just stupid. Choose an appropriate spot and use common sense, and you can get as close as you want. It's coyotes (especially big Eastern Coyotes) that I worry about, because they are silent, stalk anything that moves, and there is no escaping them without confrontation. They are the only reason I carry bear spray.
If you get killed by a moose, it's because of your own stupidity, really. There is no excuse for putting yourself in a position for that, because there are always options if you have the patience for them.
