I saw last year some guy doing a neat deal where he'd throw the camera out of focus during the exposure which gave a sort of blooming quality to the light, but what are some other things to try?
I tried that technique (failed...I expect it's far easier with a manual focus lens). I also tried throwing the zoom around, but that's generally nothing special. One thing that did get me a little more crisp of a look was during the exposure sort of randomly holding my hand in front of the lens and taking it away (mainly I'd cover it immediately after a burst).
Any other ideas of things to try?
