AMD is for example constantly porting various of their CPU designs from TSMC to GlobalFoundries. And from GlobalFoundries back to TSMC.
How is this possible? It is because AMD holds those patents in use, and not TSMC.
This is the process you want to stop as an IDM.
You would want to rule the world and cuck all the other foundries. That means you have to secure all the best image sensor related patents.
This way Nikon becomes cucked to be your customer for their high-end image sensors.
Canon becomes cucked too, but in a different way, they get less advanced sensors because they refuse to work with you.
And even Canon are forced to become your customer if they want the best 1inch sensor for example.
