As far as traveling with film goes. I wasn't too worried at all. Think a lot of people overestimate the fragility of film. All this stuff sat in my backpack in ~30C for the majority of the 9 months I was backpacking. Some of it went through upwards of 10 x-ray passes. I didn't start asking for hand checks until I was in double digit x-ray exposures.
The film was kept in big Ziploc bags in the interior of my bag. During my trip I mailed 4 packages home with both developed and undeveloped rolls inside. Won't sugar coat it, travelling with that much film was a pretty huge pain in the ass. Most budget airlines have a 7kg limit for carry-on. The film + cameras + backpack would nearly take all of those 7kg up.
