Triste is a filter in the Nik suite, which is a photoshop plugin set. It's not jpeg only. Triste is a preset that intentionally creates a muddy image. I understand that you're a technician-fag from /g/ and have little experience with artistic intent, but...welcome to intent.
Pretty obvious intent, since my typical B&W style is very high contrast with lots of pure whites.
Doubly stupid because you're talking to a Fujifilm shooter about the film simulation presets...that you clearly know nothing about, because you can't afford a camera that isn't a rebel.
Why do I say you know nothing about them? Because you have more control over a Fujifilm jpeg (via the Q menu, or by converting it in-camera) than you do over the raw files from a rebel purely because of the difference in sensor architecture and the extent of the fine tuning given to the jpeg engine by fujifilm.
Fujifilm jpegs are a very different beast than the jpegs that the used DSLR your mum bought you takes. :^)
