I'm imagining someone seeing a pigeon and digging around for a zoom, losing the pigeon, and cursing not spending $3000 on a 25-500mm f3.5 and it's hilarious and unlikely.
Worst case scenario, if you don't have the hardware capability to take the pictures you want at all ever, you will not take those pictures, you will not have fun, and you will not become a better photographer. So you should make sure you have hardware that is sufficient to take the pictures you want to take, and to do the things you want to do with them. For most people this ranges from a phone's built in P&S capabilities to a cheap APS-C DSLR with a kit zoom and maybe a longer lens or an ultrawide thrown in. And a $10 lightroom subscription. Can't forget that one.
