Use the first dipper to choose the darkest point in the image, the middle one to choose a midpoint, and the last to choose a white point
Boom, you've just calibrated the picture (I like to use the middle one and mash the left click of my mouse on a shadowy area until the photo looks right, and that's usually a good start)
