Smartphones.
More precisely, it was the iPhone 4 which started the whole massacre in 2010.
From that point on, smartphone photography skyrocketed and 'traditional' cameras such as point-and-shoots were seen as ancient, bulky tech with no way to instantly share your vacation pics to Facebook or Instagram.
Camera manufacturers have missed the chance to catch up with smartphones and slept on the idea of making their products more 'smart', such as in implementing powerful smartphone processors, internet access etc.. you name it.
The pure irony however is, that Android was supposed to become a new, powerful OS for cameras..and not smartphones.
Nowadays smartphones have become such powerhouses with multiple lenses, big enough sensors, artificial intelligence and crazily good processors that make any other compact camera look obsolete the moment they are released.
