The front element is far more simplified and that allows it to get sharper center than Sigma and Sony. You can tell from this image the contrast in the Tamron is razor sharp.
I do agree the difference between 12 and 17 is massive, but now 14 vs 17.
All that extra width is paid for in size and weight, and lack of ability to use cheap screw-on filters.
And you actually have to love the rectilinear wiide angle distortion too, those who don't are recommended to use above 21mm. And for this type of person the ability to push to 17mm is usually flexibility enough.
