If I were OP I wouldn't jump straight on the 50mm f/1. The 50-140mm f/2.8 costs about the same but covers all the classic portrait focal lengths, all in one lens. Probably higher availability on the used market, and he can get it with the expectation of selling it and replacing with faster primes later on.
