If you just want to dip your toes, a 90s SLR like a Rebel G or F100 are as advanced as you want them to be or you can buy a point-and-shoot camera. Both of those cameras are compatible with modern lenses if you're already into digital. Avoid early electronic SLR's(ex. AE-1) unless you're a collector or have money. They will continue to fail and become paperweights and functionally not TOO different from their mechanical predecessors.
