Here's what it looks like using a Opteka 500mm f6.3 with 2x TC, small 171mm extension tube, and lens set to closest focus. This was on a tripod with 4-way rail, telephoto lens mount, and using a remote. With the rail, what you see is the most in-focus it can get, which enhances all the imperfections of the mirror/lenses and cheap TC. The working distance here is somewhere around 6-7 feet. Magnification is about 1.56:1
It looks like motion blur, but that's how it looks in the view finder too. The TC gives it all sorts of weird halos. Adjusting the focus using the rail just changes the shape of the halos, but doesn't make them smaller than they are in this image.
