Sony a6000 to 6400 depending on your budget, very very tiny camera. I held one in a Best Buy and I felt like I was going to break it. But capable of really great pics, and not too expensive. Canon, Fujifilm, and Nikon all have slim small mirrorless cameras in the same class, maybe cheaper. Could make it even thinner with a pancake lens but those can get expensive and they don't have zoom. You can also get a telephoto lens in bundles pretty cheaply, but that's something else to carry.
Or you could go with a 1" sensor compact camera with some zoom. It's a step below DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, and micro four-thirds cameras, but it's a major step above every digital point and shoot camera and basically every phone camera. Panasonic, Sony, and Canon have good options in this class. I have a Lumix ZS100 and it's really nice. Can honestly produce DSLR quality photos in some cases with no lenses to swap.
I wouldn't recommend anything less than that. 1/2.3" sensor cameras are the super compact coolpix cameras and you'll just never get great photos out of them. I mean yeah yeah "the one you have with you" but 1" sensor cameras aren't that much bigger, and 1/2.3" cameras are only better than phone cameras because they can zoom.
