Enough to be able to talk with other photographers, such as your friend, and maybe help him out at some of his gigs to get some experience. Depending on whatever skills you have you could do this on your own or maybe find some sort of classes to take. I would consider myself a relative beginner and I know I can do much better than some of the worst trendy shit on insta or some of the pics posted here, and I've been shooting on and off for most of high school (in college now). But you have to understand that success in these entertainment industries is very hard to come by, and you are competing with people who have spent their lives devoted to this as a passion. And being a gimmick photographer won't get you very far if you don't have the skills and connections to back it up.
