The zone focus ones will tend to always favor using higher aperture stops over lower ones to make sure more things are in focus, even if you do get lucky with it choosing f/3.5 that's not a very bright f/stop for night time even if you're using iso 1600. mind you this is all void if you don't mind using flash.
The XA3 is the best compact for day shooting, no arguing with that.
