I don't do car photography myself but here is what I think:
Your background should either be neutral or interesting.

In the attached pic the background is a beautiful landscape.
I think you should not even try to take a good car photograph if you have no control over the lighting and composition. Like at car shows or if you see a cool car parked outside. Forget about it.
