I thought my old point-and-shoot camera including all the gear for it for $400 was a major purchase. I had it for 8+ years and made about $10k shooting photos with it. I figure I'll be buying crap for this camera for the next 3 years, unless I get off my ass to make more money in a shorter amount of time. The difference between the old camera and this camera is I'm not planning on making money with this camera. This is my full hobby camera.
100 days after buying the D3400, I'm a couple 100 photos over the '10,000 photos taken' mark and I'm loving the step up.
