Macro is very difficult to do well, and most people don't even really try. There are crazy lighting setups, and crazy focusing techniques, and ways to tackle the usual issues that come with shooting that way. Most people just put a macro lens on, walk around their house, and look for reasons to use it. Which nobody gives a shit about. Most macro you see is just close up photos of otherwise boring shit, like velcro, speaker grills, wires, carpet, and computer monitors.
People go into macro thinking about how fun it is to use the gear, rather than thinking about what photos people might actually enjoy seeing. Macro is a lot like tilt shift.
That isn't to say you can't find great things to do with them, it's just a lot harder than gear fags would have you believe.
