Don't think that. It's often just some combination of luck and persistence.
I once asked some wildlife dude how he nails perfect focus - his response was "I take a lot of photos and some of them end up sharp."
If you think being able to place the plane of focus in this wolf photo through the nearest eye and the rear "eyelashes" at 85mm f/1.2, manual focus, with a shitty "focus by wire" lens was skill... it was just bulldhidd luck.
