Many other people love it. It's a matter of opinion. But by definition, if you're looking for versatility, you should be getting a zoom lens.
The kit lens is what you're looking for, and I'm not sure why you're looking elsewhere. That's the entire point of the kit lens. Versatility, flexibility, and great image quality in an enormous variety of scenarios. The AF is great, the colors are great, the build quality is great, the detail is great... (not "not exceptional, as you claim, see pic related, taken with the kit lens from about 15 feet away) the only down-side is the (relatively) small max aperture, but the performance on Fuji sensors is so good that you hardly ever notice it. It's barely any bigger than the 35mm, and you won't really notice the difference in practice.
