I couldn't walk down the street without cars honking, people on motorcycles honking and pedestrians wanting to shake my hand and take selfies with me. Everyone who speaks even a little English will engage you in conversation. Possibly not in Tehran where they're more used to tourists.
Most people seemed really appreciative that I knew a lot of Iranian history, and were in complete agreement with them about the US being the aggressor in the ongoing conflict. So probably doesn't hurt to read up on at least recent history, and try to avoid expressing US sympathies.

Again, look up the mountain areas, they look wonderful, and are the main reason I'd want to go back.
