>>4477043I got a new old stock SLIK tripod with a ballhead and it was driving me insane the first time I used it last week. That's not to say all ballheads are bad but make sure you have enough room between the tallest point and the shaft of the ball going up to the mount. On this type I could barely move side to side without having to go into the horizontal mode. What was more annoying than anything was the retention, too lose it's just falling over, if it was tight enough to retain position so I could run a shutter release I couldn't make any more adjustments without having to loosen and tighten again.
I bought a $20 fluid tilt pan head to try that's coming tomorrow that I'm going to try out.
