all the cards i'm using are also old, so *maybe* that could be it; in any case, i ordered new batteries and cards so i can cross that off when they get here in a few days
i'll wait on those before i attempt to disassemble the thing myself, unless someone else can gleam some more information

the mechanism to control the shutter seems to function correctly and i can see it operate when i look into the lens
this is the one pic that was on the card that was in it
pretty sure this thing would have been stored in a somewhat cool/cold garage or closet since 2012 or so
