Put your headphones on and just do your thing, maybe look behind the person after you take the shot as if you're getting ready for your next shot, no big deal.
People are not argumentative in general, in the UK not at all, maybe in US a bit more. Obvs if you wanna play it safe, don't shoot people that look like they're waiting for an excuse to start a commotion.
Know your rights, be nice, and just do your thing as if it's normal occurrence. If people ask what the pictures are for, say for a project at uni, you're studying photography etc. You can give them your email address, if they want to have their photo sent to them.
You might get some stares, but no big deal.
