If I'm going to be forever locked into one lens I want it to be the best one possible, even at the expense of the range of subjects I can shoot. The number of possible subjects in a lifetime is practically infinite, and even if a small fraction of those can be shot with a nifty, a fraction of infinity is still infinity. So it seems like an easy trade-off to make.
