I can't recommend an AE-1. It's not that it's bad. It's just overpriced for what it is. A1, I think might be better - more features for a start.
I know there's better out there for cheaper but I don't know what it is.
I also own a Canon T70 - which is very electronic and very 80's in design, but is still manual focus. It's also remarkably small.

Either Pentax Spotmatic SP - compact and functional. Not overpriced. Light meter works well too.
Or - Canon P. Compact, Rangefinder is 'different'. And you can get some very fancy glass for it. It's robust - but the clutch in mine has gone. They haven't gone stratospheric yet.
