It's a much bigger waste for them to come find you for no reason at all, even the guy that called them probably wasted more time and effort explaiing why he's calling the cops, than you did talking to the cops.
I've never been bothered by cops, but a couple times I'd go out at 2:00-3:00am with a bronica and a tripod for long exposures, and I'd set up in front of buildings etc, some were hotels/offices. Sometimes a bored nightguard would walk to me half-asleep and ask what I'm doing, maybe ask if I'm doing that for uni ("yes") and the most I'd gotten was "please respect our clients' privacy" (-"ok").
