Film is dying because digital is so much more convenient.
Film is dying because digital camera makers can't sell you the greatest thing every 3-5 years when everyone is able to buy the same 'image sensor' in the chemist and potentially get the same great picture, no matter how 'old' their equipment.
All they could do with newer gear was make it easier to get the good result - not up the quality of the final result.
It's a really democratic technology when you think about it. It doesn't really matter how old your gear is, so long as it's still working, it's cared for and worked right to begin with - you can still get results as good as someone who bought the latest thing.
It's so much easier to justify a new sensor with better dynamic range and lesser noise - especially for the guys that need the speed. When the film lads could just pick the film that suited and keep working with whatever they had.
I wonder how fast a film could go if the technology kept being developed for the last decade. I know some people have shot Ilford and Kodak films at ISO's like 12800 and higher -and still gotten good results.
