Most social medias use hashtags to decide content to give you, and it works, barely. Absolutely nothing is stopping anyone from posting content and adding irrelevant hashtags to spread their shit way beyond where it should be contained. This is the primary reason why if you ever go on the explore page on instagram half the shit will have absolutely no real relevance to you but when you check the hashtags of one of the posts you'll see something that IS relevant. They are easily exploitable and incredibly annoying. But they are still useful when contained properly, which is rarer than getting struck by lightning.
